The FAT project is a collaborative project based within Poole. We had to work with the architecture and textile students to create a cohesive piece of work that related to Poole by aligning, expanding and developing culture, skills and other perspectives from the subject area. The word assigned to our group was “TEXTURE”.

Upon visiting Poole we found that the high street is relatively busy but the one thing missing was a meeting point, noun “a place where people or things meet. ( The common element between fashion, architecture and textiles is the protection of the body. To cover the body and to provide “shelter”. It made the most sense to go ahead with the idea of the construction of a sheltered meeting point to connect the three courses. Our initial mind map began with protection.

The light interaction with the wet street surface textures was interesting. The textures of the pavestones, nets from the fishing boats were most dominant. The webby nets from fishing boats reminded us of the texture of cocoons and how they’re essentially silky cases spun to protect pupae.

We weren’t going to take the literal approach and create a cocoon, but this helped us come up with a base shape which was a dome, or shell. Throughout the years, domes have conceptually been used in both architecture and fashion, as fashion is heavily influenced by architecture and vice versa.

Going back to the theme of the project, “texture” noun “The feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance. "skin texture and tone”. We decided that it would be more interesting to make use of projection mapping, “Projection mapping, also known as video mapping and spatial augmented reality, is a projection technology used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into a display surface for video projection.” to project visual texture’s on to the “meeting point” We unanimously decided to create a bench that would serve the purpose of a shelter and meeting point, layered over with different textiles to create the physical texture. For the visual texture, we scanned in different fabrics, knits, textiles, and took those images into photo shop. We distorted, skewed and replaced colour to create a GIF that was going to be projected onto the bench.

For the actual construction the textile students developed their own textiles that we could use. They were all in white this was so that the projection would be clearer. We used elements that could relate back to Poole such as the netting, the silver hoops.

It was a really fun collaborative project to work on with the other students. It was intriguing to work with so many creative minds and have one idea quickly develop into a miniature installation within the span of 3 days. Fortunately we all worked well together and everyone equally participated in the work that resulted in the final piece.
